Recycling Setup

The key to setting up your recycling properly is to first understand how your hauler collects it, either single-stream or dual-stream. Check your hauler’s website or contact them directly to find out how they recycle. Your hauler should never be collecting garbage and recycling together. Recycling must be source separated, meaning the generator is responsible for sorting their trash and recycling. For additional information please see our School Recycling Toolkit on Google Drive.

Classroom

Single-stream: If your hauler uses single-stream recycling you should provide at least two bins in every classroom: one for garbage and one for recycling. Each of these should be clearly labeled with the materials that go in the container.

Dual-stream: If your hauler uses dual-stream recycling you will need to provide three bins in every classroom: one for paper recyclables, one for bottles/containers, and one for garbage. Each of these should be clearly labeled with the materials that go in the container.

Cafeteria

Single-stream: You should provide at least two bins in the cafeteria: one for garbage and one for recycling. Both bins should be clearly labeled.

Dual-stream: Provide at least three bins: one for paper recyclables, one for bottles/containers, and one for garbage. Each of these should be clearly labeled with the materials that go in the container.

Liquids Container: All containers must be emptied of food and liquids before recycling. Provide a station where students can pour out leftover liquids before recycling bottles, cans, or cartons.

Outdoor Collection Areas

Outdoor Enclosures: Outdoor enclosures for recycling and garbage dumpsters help keep areas orderly and prevent illegal dumping and contamination. When planning outdoor enclosure areas, always account for their precise dimensions as well as clearance to access all sides of each dumpster.

If your school uses single-stream your outdoor collection area will have at least one recycling container and one trash. If your school uses dual-stream your outdoor collection area will have at least two recycling containers and one trash.
